please help with .srt file which won't load

Unread postby Go Travel » Tue Feb 24, 2015 4:38 pm

Hi, I am getting parse errors when I try to load an .srt file into Aegisub, please help
I get a loading error message like "expected timestamp pair at line 2" but there appears to be nothing wrong with the format of line 2 pair

line 1 also gave a parse error which I may have fixed by removing a url from it

please have a look at attached .srt file if you can help fix this.

The file is invalid in several ways.

The first line in the file is a title, more or less, which is not allowed to be there. Only line 2 has a subtitle index (index 0), and then line 3 has the timestamps for subtitle 0. But because the first line has invalid data, reading never gets that far.

The second subtitle in the file, starting at line 6, has the subtitle index written in Chinese rather than Arabic numerals, which would also make it invalid. (But I think Aegisub ignores that.)

Subtitles 17 and 18 seem to have a strange tag structure, a <b> tag terminated by </乙> which isn't really a valid tag at all.

I suppose Aegisub's SRT reading should be made more forgiving, and attempt to "rescue" files that can't be read at first, and then just warn that some lines had problems and the result might have lost data.

is this file repairable , in your opinion? Are there just the 4 errors which you pointed out or is this just what
stood out to you at first glance?

If it is just a few errors, any suggestions on how to rewrite those errors would be helpful, I am brand new to this.
if it is just four errors , can you write them so it will open?

Delete the first line in the file, so the second line with just "0" on it becomes the first line.

Change the 一 line before the second subtitle to be "1" instead.

Replace both instances of </乙> with </b>

Then it should work perfectly.

thanks so much, almost there!

still getting "unexpected timestamp pair at line 2" error message

it is confusing the heck out of me wondering what ' line 2' refers to. Is 'line 2' the second line of subtitles
or is it the subtitle labeled 2? (it starts at zero , so the second line of subtitles is actually the subtitle labeled 1,
and the subtitle labeled 2 is actually the third subtitle.

I am grateful that my .srt file was repaired for me, and would still like to know the answer to the above question.
My hope is that some day I will be better to use Aegisub.

That error was shown because the file had "-->" in timestamps without spaces, so I've replaced them with " --> ".

Hi, I am having the same problem with this .srt file , downloaded from ccsubs.com (I am including that url so that uses of that closed caption downloading site who have the same problem as me can find this message in future)

please help with this, Aegisub is saying 'expected timestamp pair in line 2' and will not open the file.

All the timestamps in that file contain only whole seconds, no decimal part. The entire file would have to be re-written for Aegisub to accept it.

thank you, jfs. it would be time-consuming to go in and add all those zeros!

for users of ccsubs.com, who experience the same problem

here is how I solved it

go to Downsub.com instead of ccsubs.com

Downsub provides the captions in an editable file which will open in Aegisub
